(with a dropped y and added ier) But I promise, it was only because we were trying so hard to be efficient testers!

Naomi and Ethan are trying to get into an alternative school, CAM, next year. I had to attend a mandatory meeting before their applications, along with written essay answers (from both the children and parents), would be accepted. As well as before they could do the testing this afternoon. They'll be tested on Reading, Writing, and Math. We decided to brush up on our math skills since that is MY weakest teaching area.

My focus being solely on the two older kids today meant that the two younger were excused to be outside all day. I am SO thankful to have a duck pond behind our house where they can spend hours playing together! I am even more grateful that they enjoy doing this.
He has made great strides this year in his responsibility for his education. So.. he spends more time off on his own "gittin' 'er done!". Today, he appears to have become distracted. He came in and said, "Mom. I got electrocuted."

When eating lemon grass chicken dinner, Jesse stops chewing and says, "This stuff isn't really grass is it?". I reply that I suppose it is some sort of grass, and that I didn't do a very good job getting rid of the tough outer parts. He says, "It's more like lemon bark!" Ooops, guess I REALLY could have done a better job!

**********

Naomi is growing up. She wore heels for the first time a few weeks ago. Soon, she'll be driving. While we were parking at Costco she said to me, "I want a Chair-ROW-key for my first car." She caught my overly large smile and said, "Is that not how you say it? Is it Chair-uh-key?.. ugh, MOM". My life is filled with lots of "Ugh, MOM"'s lately.. but they're all worth savoring.

**********

Jesse, while supposedly doing Literature, sneezed. After sitting uncharacteristically still for about 20 seconds he says matter-of-fact-ly, "Mom, I can see my brain cells sending messages. I see black dots and they have white lines that go through them." A few minutes later, while still "doing literature", "Am I seeing stars when I see white dots?".

*********

While studying pioneer travel during the 1800's I asked Annah, "How did people get from Sweden to New York?". She quickly replied, "Speed boat!".. one too many Geico commercials for that girl!

*********

Jesse is studying Medieval times. He's supposed to draw a coat of arms. After much discussion and clarification, he decided to draw a griffon. He begins by dividing the shield into fourths. I said, "I thought you were drawing a griffon?" He says, "That's one. I'm gonna draw a snake, and a lion, and a badger. They're going to be... " I cut him off and said, "Stop talking and just write." he immediately replies, "You mean draw?". Yes, thank you. Now do it! Funny how he can figure out language arts issues when he wants to stall.. or go into great detail about something instead of just doing it.

**********

Jesse is having a hard time in school. It's a matter of focus and interest. While trying to push him through a Language Arts lesson, he is constantly distracted by a loose tooth. He sat there staring off for a minute and then asked me, "Mom. Is there blood?" as he opened his mouth for me to peer inside. I told him yes there was and his face broke into a large heart melting grin, "That's because it's departing.".... Good use of vocabulary, now back to grammar.

**********

Ethan was discussing Robin Hood with me. "He lived in the Hundred Acre Wood.. right?" It's obviously rare that I catch him in a funny... I thought that was a good one!

**********

I was making a cake last week and Jesse came in and asked, "Mom? How long would it take a snail to travel around the world?" I told him I wasn't exactly sure.. but a long time. He replied, " That would be a good science experiment!"

Annah and Jesse played outside all afternoon. They've even utilized the hose while continuing to appear before me with less and less clothing.

In Composition Jesse and I have been working on poetry. He's been working on figurative language, descriptive language, similes and metaphors, and he has not been loving it. This afternoon, the sun must have provided nutrients to his depleted creative self.

Annah came storming inside, bawling. Jesse was following her, sheepishly, "I'm sorry Annah it isn't BAD". The fire that shot out of her eyes in his direction said that "Yes, yes it was bad". Wondering what had changed two kids playing peacefully outside, enjoying the sun and interesting creatures it lures out of hiding; I tried to gain understanding, "What happened?". Through tears and red hot anger she pointed to her brother and said, "HE said, 'Annah, you're as pale as a dead old man'". Giggles erupting around me, I tried to soothe my poor daughter's hurt feelers. "Annah, when I was little, my mom's uncle used to ask my mom, 'What's wrong with that girl? Is she sick or something? She's pale as a ghost!'" (Or, maybe he said Michael Jackson.. I can't remember if according to him it was my nose or skin tone that was Jackson-esque). (not to be confused with my mother's side of the family Jackson-esque qualities) "Your skin is beautiful and looks like mine." Empathy did the trick and she was able to quit crying, feeling not so alone in her paleness.

I told her brother he should leave his poetry in the classroom for now, and encouraged him toward the belief that a woman's pale skin is a sign of leading a refined life... as I nodded toward my pale offspring wearing a spaghetti strap tank and boxers, drenched from playing in the hose in February. Refined indeed.

I oversaw the "apology ceremony" and encouraged the two to return to the beautiful, sunshine filled outside.. minutes before the temperature dropped, the sky darkened and pellets of hail began to fall causing another wardrobe change including snow boots and gloves. They were back to playing, back to enjoying the ever changing out of doors together. I wonder what inspiration will come from this round of play?
It's almost summertime!"

Our internet pooped out on us about noon today. I took that as a sign that it was time to feed the rascals, and they dropped their pencils and headed out into the sunshine! A few minutes later, Jesse and Annah came back in, shoe-less looking for footwear. Annah told me excitedly that it was indeed almost summetime, "It's SO warm outside!"
"Mo-om! Look, I told you it was almost summertime. Look what I found out there, a lady bug!" She wandered around talking to her new found friend and came back asking, "Do you have something for me to hold Lady in?" I'd already recycled the glass tomato sauce bottles from the weekend, and so offered her a rinsed out tuna can. I figured Lady stood a better chance of survival if her option to leave was left open.

Annah ran outside, got some grass and brought Lady's new home in to show me. She then said, speaking to Lady, "Here's the deal, you can crawl on my arm AFTER you do your household chores. Clean your room! Good job! Oh! Are you limping?" (I bet she is!) "You're such a good little creature! Let's go outside."

They've had their lunch and Jesse brought in his find,,, not as loveable as Lady, his name is Hiss.
Annah continues to talk to Lady.. they seem to be bonding quickly.

"I should clip your wings.... OH! You little scamp! (pause) He's a Christian, he keeps bowing to God."

She is a wonder this bug whisperer child I'm raising.

I had a little bird

It's name was Enza

I opened the window

And in-flu-Enza

I remember learning this little poem while in Victoria BC with my parents on "holiday" the summer before I married. We visited some historic village type place. It was centered around some famous person I don't remember the name of. They had all sorts of "fun" facts about songs we sing or sayings we use that came from rather morbid roots. Like the nursery rhyme "Ring a-round the Rosie" Morbid indeed.

I don't know when exactly we opened the window, but Enza definitely has flown in. We've fought tooth and nail, with vitamins and lozenges and teas, and yet slowly by slowly, we're dropping like flies.

We girls seem to have had it the worst so far. Although, today Ethan is in bed with body aches. And, though he is still in denial, Bruce started sniffling and sneezing yesterday.

The only one who seems to be immune to Enza's ill affects, is Jesse. I am puzzled by this. The boy does everything wrong.. or right to get sick. He spends countless hours outside in the dreary weather, jacket-less and touching all manner of dig-scusting things. Three out of four meal times, I realize post meal that his hands are covered in grime and his nails look rather Gollum-esque. He is the one I have to remind to shower. The one I have to remind that once you shower, you change your undergarments. Why? Why is this dirt loving Pig Pen wanna be the only one who isn't sick? It's not like the rest of us are germaphobic, instant hand sanitizing Nazis. We all take the same vitamins. We all live in the same non-neurotic "clean" house.

I'm reminded of another history lesson I had. When we were first married, Bruce befriended an adorable elderly couple. They were both in their nineties and died before Annah was born. He was Russian, had lived through the Russian revolution and told stories of the horror and meager living circumstances surrounding the Russian people of that time. She was Dutch and never spoke of her homeland. Although, she did tell us about that one day she was working as a clerk in a skyscraper and watched the Hindenburg go down in flames. Amazing story tellers they were. Anyway, he told us that while he and his sister were in hiding, making their way through the Black Forest with their Grandmother, they had little to no food. Sometimes, if they were lucky, they'd have a potato to share amongst their little group of travelers. When they weren't so lucky, Grandma would make soup. She'd boil roots, grasses, and ROCKS. They would suck up the nutrient rich broth, and that would sustain them through the cold, wretched wandering they had to endure to come to freedom.

Maybe, just maybe Jesse is more nutrient rich because he touches all of that stuff outside and by not washing ingests some bacteria fighting goodness God put in creation all around us. Whatever his secret to staying healthy is, I'm certain it isn't something his cleaner family is going to figure out in the near future.

This has led to some emotional days. Some emotional subjects, and some emotional outbursts. The latest one was, sadly, in a very public setting.

The children and I were grocery shopping at Costco. We'd gone to the Asian food store that morning, then ran to the mall to exchange some recent ill fitting purchases, then to the bank to open a savings account for my oldest (only to realize that, duh, she needs her ss# with her!), then BACK to the mall to have lunch with my husband, and finally to Costco. By this time, we were all a little tired of running around as a group in public. I was having to repeat my famous line, "walk behind me in a row, not around me like a crowd". Trying to get 4 kids, no matter how well behaved, through the tangled web of people at Costco is always a chore.

My children LOVE that Costco has samples, as do many adults I know. I abhor them. They cause traffic jams and make me feel guilty about eating an advertisement and then not buying the product. Thus, my children have to ask before taking samples and even with that permission tend to feel a bit guilty about it. Did I mention we'd JUST ate lunch? Another reason I dislike the sample gallery. I tend to eat things when I'm not hungry if they're offered to me.. I need a "no soliciting" t-shirt while walking through there!!

Any-who, we had made it through produce, deli, and were into the frozen foods section, the "gauntlet" of samplers and shoppers. I'd said yes to some samples, no to others. We came up behind a woman sampling egg rolls and on the other side of the aisle, a man was sampling some other food. Their tables made a narrowed aisle so I asked Naomi to go in front of the woman's table and grab a different package of spring rolls than the indigestion inducing egg rolls the woman was sampling. I received a text from my friend about our running date that was in about an hour, and was replying and told the other kids that yes, they may sample the egg rolls from the woman in front of me. She did a lovely job of announcing her product, British accent and all. I was texting, Na came back with the spring rolls, I had the kids get "behind" me, and we began making our way through the little aisle space between the two tables. As we were passing, I happened to see one of my kids swipe a second sample off of the tray. We continued walking and I pulled that child up and was correcting their swipery when all of a sudden I hear from behind in a crisp, clear, beautiful English accent, "Not ONE of those children said thank you!". By this time we were about 15ft from her sampling table. (I'm shaking again just typing this and it was three days ago!)

I turned around, walked back to her table and said shakily, "If you have a problem with my children, I'd appreciate you talking about it to me, instead of announcing it to the rest of your customers!". She proceeded to argue that she hadn't announced anything. When I repeated her words she again argued that she wasn't telling the customers. I replied telling her how far from her table I was when I heard her exclamation of my children's lack of manners. She followed that with, "Well, I try and provide a service with manners and appreciate it when customers reply with manners."

About this time is when I think I went from shaking over confronting someone to realizing I was being watched by everyone around me and in the middle of an argument with a store employee. I began to tear up not only due to embarrassment, but the overwhelming feeling that this woman has no idea who I am, how I train my children, or how much of my life is spent doing just that. For goodness sake, it was 2 in the afternoon on a weekday and I was dragging 4 obviously school age children through a crowded grocery store. Because, I feel it is MY job to train and educate my children and not someone else's.

Trying to hold back the tears, I continued the argument. "I train my children to have manners. However, they ARE children, and they don't always remember them. I'm sorry they didn't say 'thank you' however, I don't appreciate your telling the rest of the store that I am not doing my job." And.. the tears began to fall. At this point a crack appeared in the glossy veneer of this woman's stone face and she said, "I'm sorry if I insulted you. Thank you for training your children, good job and keep it up!" Ya, about four arguments too late she listened to me and saw that she had indeed crossed a boundary that was inappropriate for a food sampler to cross. Her job is to offer samples to sell product for her employer, not correct ill mannered children through humiliation.

Through my tears I said a final, "You never know what people are going through and you should try and be more understanding." Then turned, gathered my chicks and walked a few aisles away where I cried and snotted and told my kids that though they knew they should've said thank you, this situation wasn't their fault. We made our way to the front of the store picking up the few other groceries we were in need of, and by the time we got to the registers I was back to simply shaking uncontrollably. I asked to speak to a manager and told him what had happened back at the "egg roll sampling table" with the woman with the British accent. As I repeated through more tears, "she doesn't know what people are going through, I am trying my best here".. he stopped me, "Put it out of your mind, it wasn't her place." He then turned and headed back to talk with Super Nanny.

I paid for my groceries and put my glasses on so my favorite receipt checker, Teddy, wouldn't see me crying and we headed to the car. My children thanking me for every thing they could think to say thank you for.

I've struggled with whether confronting this woman was the proper thing to do. Was I being proud? Was I doing what I accused her of, not thinking about what other people are going through and jumping on them for offending my own code of ethics? Perhaps she too is going through a rough patch and feels unappreciated (under-de-me-see-ated if you've ever seen Bedtime Stories). I've asked God to show me how to be more gracious toward those who offend my sensibilities, or attack my children for something that I harp on them about day in and day out. I see that I went into confronting her "protecting my children" but was really protecting my place as trainer of those children. Lord help me to be humble, help me to walk in the grace you extend me for offending your sensibilities daily. May I view others as you view them and not simply see the wear and tear that this life has caused.

I encourage you reader, try and view others not through the lens of who you aim to be, but who've been. You never know what someone else is going through to cause them to act the way they do.
My youngest has always been homeschooled, and her brother above her went to just kindergarten at a brick and mortar school. You would think that I pulled them recently listening to the conversation they had in the car yesterday.

There was a woman with a suitcase walking on the side of the road where we were sitting waiting for traffic to clear from an accident ahead of us. Annah said, "Look! That lady is a hobo." Jesse, obviously irritated with his younger sibling's inaccurate judgement of this woman's residential status replied, "Annah. Look at her. She's not a hobo. She's too pretty to be a hobo. That's my teacher from kindergarten, Mrs. Kammerzel" Obviously, one's residential status is dependent on one's beauty. Annah, trying to prove her memory to be as strong as her big brother's, "Oh right!". Jesse must have looked closer at the lady because he decided that this woman, though definitely not a hobo, was also not Mrs. Kammerzel. "That's not Mrs. Kammerzel, she was prettier, like Mrs (insert one of his friend's mom's names). No, she was even prettier, like Mrs. Knudson." Annah and he both agreed that she was indeed so beautiful as to not only make it impossible for her to ever be a hobo, but to surpass the friend's mom and reach the same level of beauty as,,, Mrs. Knudson. Mrs. Knudson is their teacher at their new co-op type school this year. She is indeed beautiful, and a fantastic addition to our schooling experience! But, she looks NOTHING like Mrs. Kammerzel who was.. a mousy little woman with little patience for Jesse and ultimately, one of the major reasons I pulled him from brick and mortar school.

Why does this precious jewel of a boy have such fond memories of a woman who didn't have the patience to properly learn his needs and teach him in a fashion that would help him grasp the information. This woman who told the rest of the class, "Ignore Jesse. He can't focus, and so we are just going to ignore him." ??? I honestly don't understand it, but I pray that it isn't something lost in his recollection of me and that my shortcomings as mother and teacher will not be what he remembers. I pray that instead of memories of all of my warts, he'll see me as lovely because he's looking at me through my love for him.

After sitting and thinking on how much his two teachers looked alike, he added, "She looked just like Mrs. Knudson, except her nose had freckles on it.. it was really cute." Oh, how he melts my heart!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-56304249945380012992013-01-31T11:00:00.000-08:002013-01-31T11:00:04.432-08:00How A Boy Prepares to Read

When it's reading time, it's best to prepare yourself for the arduous task ahead of you.

You may start by practicing with the basics, such as map reading:

Or, perhaps work on drawing conclusions about text by referring to the pictures:

"Mom? Can you text with this?", asked Jesse while in apparent deep thought. After trying to figure out why he would think that I said, "No."

"Well, why are there these letters on the numbers?" I replied, now smiling, "Sometimes businesses will have a phone number such as 1-800-FOR-RENT. So to dial it you have to push the different keys that have those letters on them."

He sat staring at it for a minute........ "Well, where is the shift button?"

It shocks and amazes me whenever there is this apparent gap in technological understanding. Not because it is too advanced, rarely because of that. Usually because it is obsolete. I think we're going to watch The Brave Little Toaster today, in honor of obsolete technology.

For two years it's seemed overwhelming and scary. I feel like I've come through a sort of fire that was unseen by many. Although God definitely was working in my life throughout this period, it was still a fire. I'm not very good at keeping my "public life" and "personal life" separate, and so I struggled with wanting to blog but feeling I'd overexpose private issues and damage the good work being done by the fire. I've also re-realized how much I allow self doubt to make me compare myself to others and so fail by not trying.

So, so far we have:
a) I want to blog
b) I'm ascared to blog
c) There was a fire
d) It was refining
e) I overexpose
f) I'm insecure.

As you can see, it's a fun time in my head.

I'm trying to identify the times I want to blog and, am seeing them directly correlating to pretty much every time I update my FB status. (oversharing habit) (but FB is even more public than this little blog, so it's easier to remember my boundaries)

I really think my kids are cute, and I think they say pretty cute things. So, that is what I'm going to try and blog about. The other stuff is too messy for now, although I do think that I ought to begin journaling so that there is some outlet for my overfilled brain.

So, consider this a warning. :) I'm going to attempt to put my FB posts into blog posts instead of inundating my larger viewer base with silly things my kids say and do. If you want to see and hear about it, check back in. If you don't, feel free to continue to check out and just pretend that I'm still on hiatus and nothing is going on.

My only regret in this new focus is how out of focus my phone pictures turn out. Do I really want to lug my camera around to sneak pictures of my cutie patooties? It's not as stealthy as my iPhone was. Hmmm, a problem I'm sure I'll find a solution to. ;)

It's nice to see you again, I hope you'll stick around. Thank you for your patience as I try and figure out my boundaries, and life in general.

She has been a joy these past few months. Of course there have been moments. But for the main part.. she is turning into a good friend, helper and mini-me. :) Such as...

Today she had a well child check. She was due for 1 booster shot. She has known this for about a week. She cried when she first found out. She has worried about it every day. Very nearly cursed me (jk) for making the appointment last week. Finally it came time to go. She brought her blankie, my 5'3" well developed 11year old. Her tummy was in knots. She teared up in the waiting room. (on a side note, I'm glad I remembered to call my hubby to meet me and watch the other three kids!!!) We were called back. She was weighed, her vision was screened and then the traumatic experiences began.

The nurse did the usual questioning.. Naomi answered most of the questions. We declined all "extra" vaccines. That still left her with two boosters to be had, one more than she had "prepared" for. She began to freak. The nurse explained kids her age do that and then feel silly afterward because it isn't as bad as they think it's going to be. She said that she would use a topical numbing spray first.. and that Naomi should barely even feel it. Ya, that wasn't believed. The nurse went to get the stuff. Naomi began her "Mommy, mommy, mommy"s... She returned. Naomi started crying. I was instructed where to stand, where to place my hands, one in front of Naomi's face so she didn't see. Oh dear. Naomi pushed and pulled and, "Wait, Mommy, WAIT!".. The nurse showed her how the spray made her hand feel. The tears continued. Her arm was cleaned and sprayed. "Mommy!" The nurse gave her the first shot. Her whole body was tense. She held her breath. "There, that one's done." the nurse proclaimed. Naomi re-freaked..but in a different way. "What? That's it? Oh, I'm a dork"..the second was administered, "really, I'm done?".. Then Naomi was laughing and proclaiming, "I could've done more!".... Sigh, my childhood drama is haunting me. The physical was humiliating and she didn't like it. She "really appreciated" being told to stay away from drugs and alcohol. I really appreciated the doctor not going into "other" ways she needed to "stay safe". This mommy isn't ready for THAT to be brought up by a doctor!

Jesse:
Man this kid has a hard time with Language Arts. He CAN do it. It's just getting him to believe he can. Today was a particularly hard day. He cried. He tore his papers. But, he got it done. Just in time for daddy to be home. We sat and talked about his time in school. Encouraging him that he is doing a good job and can do it!
Then we talked about gymnastics starting tomorrow. All of the kids are going. Jesse said he is hoping they don't make him do cartwheels. He said, "I'm too old for them". Which he quickly followed with, "Remember Winnie the Pooh, I still like him". :) "Remember the first one, the movie that Maga has? I like that when he sings." So of course I broke out in the "Little Black Raincloud" song. He sat on the table listening, smiling. I finished. He sat there smiling staring at the floor.. a couple minutes later he jumped down and said, "Ok, bye, I'm going to Brett's. See you at 5!".. Such a funny little guy.

Ethan:
This child. He captures my heart, and breaks it the most often. He'll be a strong man. We're learning how to focus his "stubborn" and "emotional" outbreaks into teaching moments. Moments to lead him instead of tear him down... it is a big job, but we're believing the promise that it will be worth it!
On the other hand, he is the jester of the house. It is amazing to see him growing and changing and his sense of humor doing the same. He makes me laugh.. sometimes I have to hide it!
Sunday we were driving into the hills outside of Estacada to find a good spot for some shooting. We were having a birthday party for Jesse and he wanted to take a pinata and the new gun and shoot it up! SO, we were scouting. As we got higher into the hills. There was snow. Ethan pipes up from the back, "Master, there is a lot of snow here. Are you sure it is safe.".. in a Dug the dog from UP voice.. it was hilarious. I wish we had a recorder that knew when the kids said something funny.. because that was just one of the MANY things he said. He often stops working and just dances around. He is just fun. I love him.

Annah:
Oh dear. Where to start. She's my baby. She's sweet. She's feisty. She's funny. She's TOO much!
Every day is day that I could write a post about her.
Today, she lost a tooth. Not by her hand. By her father's. It was loose. Too loose. It was so loose it was brown and maybe her breathe hadn't smelled right for a week.. blech. So, it was Daddy to the rescue. After chasing her with a hammer and pliers, he held her on his lap and used a paper towel to hold on. Then there was blood. Then there was more "chasing". Then she sat back down, "crying". I distracted her by taking pictures. Then.. it was out. She was better. Making funny faces with her toothless smile. She practiced somersaults into a bridge, for gymnastics tomorrow. She sat on my lap for a finger clipping. She sat at my feet to get a neck rub.. for about 2 minutes. She danced to music... on the movie the rest of us were watching during this whole time of Annah-ness. She is an attention getter... that girl. She's craziness wrapped up in a little body of perfected baby childness. Sigh.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-53747880162891791582011-01-11T13:37:00.000-08:002011-01-11T15:30:33.189-08:00Some soup I made. (Edited)Taco soup turned wanna be Chili:

1lb. ground chicken
brown it.
Add:
1pckg. Taco Seasoning
1pckg. Hidden valley Ranch mix
1/2 an onion diced.

Let simmer for a bit.

Add:
2c Low sodium Chicken broth
3 cans beans of your choice, drained and rinsed
1 can corn, drained
(I was emptying my recycling bin and realized I also added two cans of diced toms with green chili's in 'em... you could add regular toms.. or no toms.. I personally like the diced with green chili's cause, ya know.. that's how I roll.)..... (that was the edited part) :)
1 bottle V8, flavor of your choice. I go with spicy cause that's how we roll in this house. But you could go with low sodium if you freak about that kinda thing.

If you wanna think of this as Taco soup, serve over crushed chips, top with cheese, sour cream and tabasco if you roll like we!

If you wanna think of this as Chili.. serve it with some cornbread.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-40285278632259398912010-10-07T16:41:00.001-07:002010-10-07T16:41:36.567-07:00This is a good thing.. right?I walked in the kitchen to find my recently awakened 6yr old standing "in" the fridge holding the milk carton. She was muttering to herself. So, I asked, what do you need. She finally says, "81%". To which I asked, "What are you looking for?". Apparently she wanted some milk, but when shaking the carton felt it to be quite empty. So, to find out how much was available, she was reading the nutrition facts label on it. I checked, there was no "81%" written anywhere on there. But still, rather clever.. right?
Also, please tell me I'm not raising my children to be neurotic about food by paying closer attention to nutrition facts!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-39456809605560382182010-09-24T12:32:00.001-07:002010-09-24T12:32:52.111-07:00I have a break!!We are ending our third week of school.
It is going great.
And usually continues to go great well past "normal" school hours.
I found out Ethan and Jesse can both use the same curriculum for Science, History and Art.
That will cut 7hrs out of my week.
I am ecstatic.
Naomi starts band next Tue.
She is playing the flute.
I am thrilled for her.
Ethan is halfway through football season.
He has grown immensely in both his ability and character through this.
Bruce has been able to assistant coach.
He too has grown.
Annah will start gymnastics soon.
This wouldn't be possible but for my dear Tiffy friend who has offered to bring her.
I need to tell Tiffy I'm accepting her offer.
Jesse wants to play guitar.
Uncle David has offered his services.
I hear he's working for Nike.
I wonder how much his services ought to cost.
I have lost more weight.
I have not been dieting.
My diet has changed.
It involves lots of:
Morning Star breakfast sausage (veggie)
Coffee
Peanut butter and Celery
Diet Coke
Fishy Crackers
And that's the main part of it.
Splendid.
I'm sure there was more I could say,
But my break is over.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-52532918647974327262010-08-19T09:41:00.000-07:002010-08-19T09:41:41.262-07:00An Update and Bit of ClarificationI'm three weeks into this new way of eating. I've lost 8lbs. My body fat % is down about 2 points. I haven't been exercising very often, maybe 1-2 times a week. I have found something I enjoy doing for exercise though. There is a track at the field where Ethan is practicing football. I've found that walking two corners and one straight away and running the other straight away is doable and even enjoyable! After the first two weeks of "cleanse" time I began using the weight loss "supplements" that were suggested to my husband as being something to help reach my goal quicker. This is a short term additive to my diet, whereas the food portion of my diet is a lifelong healthy eating habit I am forming.

I've been waking up earlier getting prepared for school to start. The first week, 5:30 was easy. This week 6:30 is as early as I've been up. There are many reasons and excuses as to why I can't seem to wake up by then. I'll spare you that and just say it is better than 9:00! (which is what I was doing 2 weeks ago!)

My house has been clean and continues to get cleaner, due to being up earlier and implementing The Daily 7 technique I talked about in my previous post.

Next week the lessons for the kids school are going to be online and ready for me to set up schedules for. I'm hoping to go through the mountain of books sent to us and set aside the ones we won't need right away as well as browse through and familiarize myself with the ones we will be using. I have no idea how teaching 4 kids in different grade levels will work. I am preparing myself for the possibility of a frustrating and tiring first couple of weeks. Of course we pray it won't be that way.

I want to share my "second breakfast" with you. Because, it was delicious and so easy!

Creamy Fruity Oatmeal:
Not only did I enjoy this very much, but it was quick and filling.. until I eat again in two hours! ;)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-35131749327920964392010-08-12T09:22:00.000-07:002010-08-12T09:22:34.457-07:00Clean, Cleaner, Cleanest?I've recently found a new blog I really like. It's not the type that keeps you glued to the screen reading for hours and waiting impatiently for the next post.. not that I do that.

It is a daily "chore" blog. Sounds fun huh! :) Trust me, as far as chores go.. this is fun.

She suggests doing 7 daily chores to maintain your house and every day posts a couple of extra things such as, "Get the cobwebs" or "Mop the kitchen". What I love about this way of doing it is that I have no dread. No laying awake thinking about the list of things I HAVE to accomplish tomorrow. Instead, it's like a special surprise waiting for me every day! (I know, the life of a SAHM is full of awe and wonder)

Here is her site. Totally Together Journal

So, today I was mopping the kitchen floor. Truth be told that was on the list yesterday... but I had errands. So, you see this isn't a fix all... just a fun tool. However, today I still did what would usually be put off until "next" time. Anyway, back to the kitchen floor. I have been using a Swiffer Wet Jet mop. Because it's easy, disposable and fun like those Biore Cleansing Pads.. you get to look at the dirty cloth so you KNOW you got 'er done! Only problem is, with all of the linoleum in my house, I need to use about 3 of those Swiffer pads to do said cleaning job and not feel like I am just taking the dirt from one room into another.. because, I can SEE that there is dirt on it!

Which leaves me wondering what other options may be more practical, economical, and if possible less toxic than I fear the Swiffer may be. My choice for today, Bleach. I know,, so not the best choice for the kids to be licking up. However, seeing as grocery shopping hasn't yet happened.. it was both practical and economical. And now my kitchen smells like a swimming pool locker room. Lovely.

I refuse to use Pinesol. I cleaned houses and a machining shop and office when I was a teen.. and so the smell brings back thoughts of other peoples messes.. eww. I also think vinegar falls into that category. I'm looking into Mrs. Meyers cleaning products,, I use a few already.. and actually looking at that link see that I could have used the all-purpose cleaner for my floor. I wondered if it would leave it filmy, but perhaps with proper dilution it will simply leave me thinking of my dear friends' Mother who always wears Rose smelling perfume. Mmmm.

So, what are your suggestions? What have you found to be tough on grime and yet not on your sensibilities or budget?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-6360525773609705352010-08-11T05:00:00.000-07:002010-08-11T13:47:02.060-07:00Wordless Wednesday: Face-shots!

The kind nutritionist lady, (Yes, I call her that to speak life into my ill feelings toward her or anyone in her position of telling me what to do with my body!) ;)... Anyway, she told me that it is important to have a well planned out post exercise "meal". It helps maximize your workout and heal your muscle.. or something. Here is a link I found that explains it better!

http://www.livestrong.com/article/65946-ideas-post-workout-meal/Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-89019621497452996642010-08-03T13:25:00.000-07:002010-08-03T13:35:06.316-07:00To diet or not to diet. That is the question. As a young woman I was trained in the art of "thin eating". Start when you're hungry stop when you're full. Lord knows this hasn't been the way I've lead my day to day eating. Me and food love each other.. too much.

Through the years of having babies I went through fazes. Eat well, Eat poorly, Eat thin, Eat gorging-ly, Exercise, forget how to even properly spell exercise, diet for medical reasons, diet for weight reasons, pills, no pills. Goodness gracious, Me Oh My! Can you say "roller-coaster"?!

My desire through all of these well intended ill-thought out approaches to getting to a healthy weight and maintaining it, was to remove the importance of food in my daily life. To come to a place where I ate out of necessity and not because I had a constant craving for this or that or both!

I've been pretty regularly exercising for a year and half now. While I've managed to lose about 9lbs. (I thought it was more until I got on a real scale) :( .... I've known in my heart I wasn't having a proper relationship with food and so I was not losing more. I got to the point where I was eating very few times a day.. but not very well. Eggo waffles and Mrs. Butterworth's for breakfast (with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter mind you!), whatever the kids were having for lunch Pb&J, Mac and Cheese, Taco Bell or if I felt so inclined left over sweets and treats. Then of course a sensible dinner because my husband was involved in that and I want him to be healthy and believe that I am doing my best to do the same. (sad I know)

Aaannnyyyway!, My dear husband has come to a point where he is wanting to help me get thin and stay thin. (prolly cause he's more worn out by my yo-yo attitude about food than I am) So he took me to Max Muscle and got me some vitamins and a cleanse to start on. Then I got weighed and had my body fat measured by the nutritionist there. Ugh. I wanted to cry and drop an elbow on her all at the same time. As if it was her fault right!? Her scale says I weigh 10lbs more than my scale says I do, and my body fat percentage was 31%.. which I had to think about that in terms of hamburger.. because 20/80 is the highest fat I buy... 30/70 would be terribly greasy.. ewww.. my insides are greasy! Blech!

The kind nutritionist lady talked to me for about half an hour about proteins and whole grain carbs and maintaining a steady blood sugar level and fat burning caused by eating such foods. She also told me I need to eat 6 times a day! And that I need to have protein and carbs at every eating.. not just meals. Oh, and I need to drink half my body weight in ounces of water every day! I was a bit overwhelmed and maybe a tad bit potty mouthed when I left.

This compared with my 99% carb diet and maybe 8oz of water a day seemed crazy. Not to mention I KNEW I'd be eating MORE calories than I was the way I had been eating. The first day I felt like I was eating constantly. I peed even more. Seriously, I couldn't go to sleep for 2hrs after going to bed because I had to pee every half an hour. I also had to stop a mile from being home after being at a Molalla BBQ and peeing before I left. I was crying in my car because it hurt so bad! Jeesh! This way of eating seemed like it was going to be awful.

Today, my fifth day, I am loving the way I feel. I have been tracking my food and exercise on Live Strong a web site created by Lance Armstrong. I have found a way to eat 6 times a day and stay at total of 1200 net calories a day! This may need to be lowered.. we'll see when I go into get weighed this Thursday. I've not felt like I'm starving once. I'll give you an example of what I eat in a day.

Breakfast:
1 container of strawberry Greek yogurt (Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt)
1/2c of oatmeal
coffee
water

A.M. Snack:
1 cheese stick
1 apple
water

Lunch:
1/2c Cottage Cheese
3oz microwaved sweet potato with pepper
1c celery or carrot or whatever
water

P.M. Snack:
Banana
2Tbl Peanut Butter
water

Dinner:
4oz of Chicken breast seasoned to my hearts desire
1c cooked Quinoa
1c steamed broccoli
water

P.M. P.M. Snack:
2tbl. Almonds
water
There is usually a Diet Coke somewhere in there as well. And this is just a sample of what I've come up with. There has been Egg whites with Dave's Killer Bread for Breakfast.. smothered in Tabasco. Turkey veggie wraps in Carb Smart Plus tortillas for lunch. Or Albacore on a bed of lettuce with onion and black beans covered in FF Catalina dressing.. mmmm that's a favorite.

So it's not at all boring. And as a matter of fact it's so much more diverse than my previous way of eating. I am finding that my body feels satisfied in both hunger and cravings.. and I think about food WAY less than I used to. Thank you Jesus!

Anyway, it's yet to be seen how well I'm actually doing as far as weight loss and what-not. But for now I definitely feel better! OH! And I've been walking with my hubby for 30-45 min a night.. going about 2-3miles.. it's been great to get out there with him. The kids have even come along on their bikes!

I started the year wanting to say good-bye to my flabby body and find the skinny me that I know is still in there somewhere! I now, thanks to my loving hubby, am feeling that I have tools that are going to help me achieve that goal as well as maintain a healthy body weight and relationship to food.

(My sister always asks her readers questions.. so I'm going to try)

What are some of your struggles with dieting and exercise? Or do you have a good grasp on it all? Is it easy for you to relate to your partner about these issues and welcome them into your journey to achieve good health? Have any of you ever tried this type of eating or "diet"? If so have you had success with it?

Ok, I'll stop now. :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14281803360608240378noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-170366352901514823.post-8094257860585748702010-08-02T14:04:00.000-07:002010-08-02T14:04:37.625-07:00Who stopped the clock?Has it really been 2+ months since I blogged? The end of school approached, and apparently I went crazy mad and spent alot of time outside or something. I've not kept up with others blogs and have definitely let mine go by the wayside. (I like using phrases like that... it makes me feel warm and fuzzy)

Well. I'm sure all of my readers will be amazed to find out the details of my summer thus far. Because I've not seen any of you. Or posted anything about our adventures on Facebook. "Lie-aaarrrr".

So what do I do in a situation like this? Act like you'll all be pleased to read about what you already know? Stop blabbing everything to everyone the moment it happens so I can have a more stable blogging career? I simply don't know.

Maybe, if I just write what is in my head, you'll all be pleasantly tickled and amused. It could be like that television show from the 90's.. a tv show about nothing. :)

Again, I don't know.

I'll get back to you when I figure it out.
And in the mean time, here are some pics for any of you who missed them in my social world, FB!
And that when she rubbed the tattoo.. "Maga would come out and be with me". She asked if people could draw a picture of Maga so that she could get a tattoo of her. She says she wishes it would really happen.

On a lighter note. We walked from our house to Tiffany's house today. We walked one way to get there and another to get back. I Googled it.. both ways are the exact same distance. .9 miles. Weird. It took 31min to walk it. That includes the 2min it took to convince Annah she could ride her bike around the dead bird in the middle of the sidewalk, the 1min it took to get her coat off of her and tie it around her waist and the 1min it took for her to recover after driving into Miss Tiff's chicks and hens, losing control and hitting her knee with the handle bars of her bike.

Along the way we passed a neighbors house. This is the conversation Annah had with me about them.

Annah- "Those people are nice."
"I know they're African."
"Bsept they speak Christian"
"But I know they are African cause their skin is black"
Me- nothing.. it stumped me.. I think I prolly giggled.
